#summer programs for high school kids at US universities: Berkeley

Please Note:

The Pre-Collegiate Program is a commuter program, designed for students who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is not a residential program. Students are required to find their own housing. Summer Sessions neither provides nor finds housing for students who are enrolled in the Program.

High school students seeking residential summer programs at UC Berkeley and international students can participate in either of the following programs:

Summer Focus at Berkeley by Education Unlimited
A residential program housed at UC Berkeley offered through one of the nation’s leading summer academic enrichment program providers.

International Pre-Collegiate Program at UC Berkeley, by Sesame Consulting
International high school students are invited to come to UC Berkeley through this special summer program.

Summer Focus at UC Berkeley – Summer Session for high school students

Summer Focus summer study at UC Berkeley is a comprehensive 6-week pre-college summer program offered for high school students in a rare public-private partnership between Education Unlimited® and UC Berkeley Summer Sessions. Summer Focus pre-college camp for high school students at UC Berkeley is designed to provide a small-group learning environment for talented and motivated high school students who want to experience college life. Student attend an actual UC Berkeley Summer Sessions class, receive support from our Education Unlimited program staff, tutoring as necessary, and have fun learning with other high schools students from around the United States and from other countries.

Precollege program for high school students – summer academic study

Summer Focus pre-college summer study camp allows entering junior and senior high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while being introduced to college life, and have a great time on a variety of recreational excursions while meeting new people from diverse backgrounds.

Summer Focus students take one UC Berkeley course for 3-4 units of transferable college credit, and choose two Summer Focus enrichment courses taught by Education Unlimited’s® expert staff. Our Summer Focus enrichment courses are afternoon classes designed to offer additional educational opportunities such as Kaplan® SAT Test Prep or College-Level Writing, as well as fun learning adventures such as Surfing, Literary Tour of the Bay Area, or Creative Writing and Illustration. Enrichment courses are designed to compliment the student’s overall Summer Focus at UC Berkeley experience and offer a much more memorable experience than regular summer school classes. Some Summer Focus electives require an additional fee that is not included in the standard camp tuition. However, in each elective block, there will be at least one elective choice which requires no additional fee.

Summer Focus Fun! Summer Focus is pre-college preparation for high school students but is designed so participants not only learn a lot, but also enjoy a true college experience! Summer Focus usually attracts a number of study abroad students from foreign countries looking for summer study and pre-college enrichment in Berkeley, bringing a strong cultural exchange experience to the program. In addition to excellent academics, Summer Focus offers a great social environment and exciting recreational activities. Students have the opportunity to explore the vibrant and culturally rich city of Berkeley, including Telegraph Avenue and other areas surrounding the campus. We also dine out in Berkeley occasionally, enjoy films in the dorms and around town, and visit local cultural attractions. Summer Focus students swim at Strawberry Canyon, play basketball at the Golden Bear Recreation Center, study over espresso in local coffee houses, and generally have a chance to experience life as a Cal undergraduate.

The EU Advantage The Education Unlimited® Headquarters is located in the heart of Berkeley, allowing us to maintain strong ties to the city, campus, and the greater Bay Area. The tuition for our six-week Summer Focus program, includes:

  • UC Berkeley tuition fees
  • Room & Board on the UC Berkeley campus
  • All recreational excursions
  • ALL summer 2009 and 2010 participants who completed to program said they would recommend the program to other students, and most rated to program 9/10 or 10/10 in overall program quality.
  • Great student staff ratios with the summer 2010 program averaging one on-site staff member for every six participants.

Program Requirements

Enrollment in the Summer Focus program is restricted to rising high school juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students are also required to submit a letter of recommendation from a current teacher and will be interviewed by an Education Unlimited home office staff member before being granted admission to the program. UC Berkeley Summer Sessions maintains its own records on each student, and after an account has been established for a student it is generally the case that the student/family must make changes in course enrollments directly with the University. If a student withdraws from the program entirely, responsibility for notifying the Summer Sessions office for the purpose of tuition assessment lies completely with the family. All tuition fees assessed to a student’s account and billed to Education Unlimited by UC Berkeley Summer Sessions are not refundable from Education Unlimited, and any requests for tuition adjustment once class enrollment is finalized must be submitted directly to UC Berkeley Summer Sessions.

The Pre Collegiate Program

The Pre-Collegiate program offers you the chance to join the community of more than 250 high school students who spend their time enjoying a summer at Berkeley. Take advantage of Berkeley courses, program events, and workshops planned just for you.Take advantage of everything campus has to offer, while simultaneously earning college credit.

Summer academic sessions begin with an orientation, a campus tour, and opportunities to meet your summer classmates. Program events planned just for you offer you a variety of helpful hints on both making the most of your Berkeley learning experience, and planning for academic life beyond high school. Berkeley staff and students, as well as visiting professionals, lead seminars about the “best practices” of using University libraries, choosing a college, and writing a successful college application and personal statement. Over pizza and soda, currently enrolled Berkeley students will answer your questions about what it’s like to be here, and much more. You may want to consider these activities and workshop opportunities when planning your summer schedule.

Pre-Collegiate program participants choose from courses offered in Session C (June 24 – August 16, 2013) and Session D (July 8 – August 16, 2013). You will find courses to meet and challenge your desire to learn. Whether you are looking for the next set of courses beyond your high school offerings, are ready to try courses in an area of special interest, or are exploring a possible college major, you can find it here at Berkeley in the summer. Learn from and with the best. An advisor at Summer Sessions will work with you every step of the way.

Benefits of the Pre-Collegiate Program include:

• The addition of Berkeley Summer Sessions on your college application
• A personal letter of commendation from the Dean of Summer Sessions, Study Abroad, and Lifelong Learning for passing grades
• A complimentary UC Berkeley transcript for completed coursework
• College credit that may be transferable to another college program*
• An Orientation and campus tour for accepted students and parents
• Seminars on writing a successful college application and career exploration, and more
• A designated advisor in Summer Sessions

Interested students can apply to the Pre-Collegiate program beginning Tuesday, February 19. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Tuition is based on the number of units you are taking. Visiting high school students pay $430 per unit with classes ranging from 1-5 units. Visiting student tuition applies to all students who are not currently enrolled in a degree program at a University of California campus. This includes all other U.S. college students, international students, and high school students.

In addition, all visiting students are charged a registration fee of $335 and a document management fee of $50.

Tuition and fees must be paid at the time of application. The online application includes a payment section, which will show the total of tuition (based on the courses for which you have applied) and program fees, if applicable, the registration fee, and the document management fee. This section also contains a section on payment details, including all necessary credit card information. Most major credit cards are accepted for payment. All charges must be paid at the time of application.

From the international student point of view, I do not like the idea of having to go through private enterprises (as opposed to having the option of doing it) and having to buy a package deal.
